HEADLINE: KTU Partners with National Insurance Company to Launch ‘Suraksha’ Student Protection Scheme
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a significant move aimed at enhancing student welfare, the Kerala Technological University (KTU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) to roll out the ‘Suraksha’ student insurance scheme. The agreement, formalized at the KTU headquarters here on Thursday, is expected to provide comprehensive financial coverage to lakhs of students enrolled across affiliated engineering and technology colleges in the state.
The initiative marks a proactive step by the university to address the growing need for risk mitigation in academic environments. Under the ‘Suraksha’ umbrella, students will gain access to a tailored insurance policy covering a wide array of contingencies, including accidental death, permanent total or partial disability, and hospitalisation due to accidents.
Comprehensive Coverage for Academic and Personal Safety
Officials from KTU stated that the scheme is designed to be both affordable and inclusive. The insurance premium is expected to be nominal per student per year, ensuring that the financial burden does not fall on families. The coverage will extend to incidents occurring both within college premises and during official academic activities, such as industrial visits, internships, and field projects.
“This partnership ensures that our students are protected against unforeseen circumstances that could derail their education. The ‘Suraksha’ scheme is not just an insurance product; it is a safety net that allows students to focus on their studies without the constant worry of financial distress in the event of a mishap,” a senior KTU official said during the signing ceremony.
Key Benefits of the Suraksha Scheme
The core features of the ‘Suraksha’ student insurance policy include:
- Accidental Death Cover: A substantial lump sum compensation to the nominee in case of accidental death.
- Permanent Disability: Financial assistance for permanent total or partial disability resulting from an accident.
- Medical Expenses: Reimbursement of medical expenses incurred due to accidental injuries, with a specified ceiling per event.
- 24×7 Coverage: The policy provides round-the-clock coverage, protecting students even while commuting to and from college or during extracurricular activities.
A representative from National Insurance Company emphasized that the claims process would be streamlined and student-friendly. A dedicated grievance redressal mechanism will be established to ensure prompt settlement of claims. “We understand that during a crisis, families need immediate support. Our digital claim processing system will ensure that beneficiaries receive compensation without unnecessary delays,” the representative added.
Implementation and Enrolment Process
The scheme will be implemented across all KTU-affiliated institutions. Colleges will be responsible for enrolling students through a centralized online portal integrated with the university’s academic management system. While the insurance will be compulsory for all regular B.Tech and M.Tech students, the university is also working on a pathway to extend it to research scholars and part-time students.
The MoU signing was attended by KTU Vice-Chancellor Dr. S. G. Gopalan, Registrar Dr. K. K. Shaji, and senior officials from the National Insurance Company’s regional office.
Conclusion
The ‘Suraksha’ insurance scheme represents a pragmatic and student-centric policy by the Kerala Technological University. By shifting the onus of financial preparedness from individual families to an institutional mechanism, KTU is setting a benchmark for student welfare in higher education. As the enrollment process begins in the coming weeks, thousands of students and their parents can look forward to studying with the assurance that a protective shield stands between them and life’s uncertainties. This collaboration underscores a growing trend of academic institutions leveraging corporate partnerships to foster a safer, more secure learning environment.
